Burkitt's Lymphoma

Common Name(s)

Burkitt's Lymphoma

Burkitt lymphoma is a rare, aggressive B-cell lymphoma that accounts for 30 to 50% of lymphomas in children but only 1 to 2% of lymphomas in adults ({10:Harris and Horning, 2006}). It results from chromosomal translocations that involve the MYC gene ({190080}) and either the lambda or the kappa light chain immunoglobulin genes ({147220}, {147200}). Burkitt lymphoma is causally related to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), although the pathogenetic mechanisms are not clear.

A multifactorial role for P. falciparum malaria in endemic Burkitt's lymphoma pathogenesis.

Author(s): Charles Torgbor, Peter Awuah, Kirk Deitsch, Parisa Kalantari, Karen A Duca, David A Thorley-Lawson

Journal:

Endemic Burkitt's lymphoma (eBL) arises from the germinal center (GC). It is a common tumor of young children in tropical Africa and its occurrence is closely linked geographically with the incidence of P. falciparum malaria. This association was noted more than 50 years ago. Since ...

Exosomes derived from Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines induce proliferation, differentiation, and class-switch recombination in B cells.

Author(s): Cindy Gutzeit, Noemi Nagy, Maurizio Gentile, Katarina Lyberg, Janine Gumz, Helen Vallhov, Irene Puga, Eva Klein, Susanne Gabrielsson, Andrea Cerutti, Annika Scheynius

Journal: J. Immunol.. 2014 Jun;192(12):5852-62.

Exosomes, nano-sized membrane vesicles, are released by various cells and are found in many human body fluids. They are active players in intercellular communication and have immune-suppressive, immune-regulatory, and immune-stimulatory functions. EBV is a ubiquitous human herpesvirus ...

Non-thrombotic superior sagittal sinus occlusion with intracranial hypertension following metastatic Burkitt's lymphoma.

Author(s): Ankur Wadhera, Prasant Peter, M Joseph John, Rajesh Chakravarti

Journal: J Cancer Res Ther. ;9(4):751-3.

Intracranial metastasis is a known complication of Burkitt's lymphoma, however, superior sagittal sinus invasion by dural metastasis from Burkitt's lymphoma is rare. We report a young adult, known case of Burkitt's lymphoma, who presented with features of raised intracranial pressure ...

Journal: J Clin Exp Hematop. 2013 ;53(2):167-73.

A Japanese man aged 30 years old contracted acute hepatitis B in October 2011, and was cured following conservative treatment. Mild hepatosplenomegaly was the only positive finding on computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography at that time. In May 2012, slight impairment of the ...

How does Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) complement the activation of Myc in the pathogenesis of Burkitt's lymphoma?

Author(s): Martin J Allday

Journal: Semin. Cancer Biol.. 2009 Dec;19(6):366-76.

A defining characteristic of the aggressive B cell tumour Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is a reciprocal chromosomal translocation that activates the Myc oncogene by juxtaposing it to one of the immunoglobulin gene loci. The consequences of activating Myc include cell growth and proliferation ...
