Thyroid Eye Disease

Common Name(s)

Thyroid Eye Disease

Thyroid eye disease can occur in people who already know they have thyroid disease, or it may be the first problem that brings people into the doctor's office. Symptoms of thyroid eye disease may include dry eyes, watery eyes, red eyes, or bulging eyes, as well as double vision or difficulty closing the eyes. Research suggests that the cause of thyroid eye disease is an autoimmune disorder. Treatment for this condition may be anti-inflammatory medications, radiation, or surgery.
