Polymyositis

Common Name(s)

Polymyositis

Polymyositis is one of a group of muscle diseases known as the inflammatory myopathies, which are characterized by chronic muscle inflammation accompanied by muscle weakness.  Polymyositis affects skeletal muscles (those involved with making movement) on both sides of the body.  It is rarely seen in persons under age 18; most cases are seen in adults between the ages of 31 and 60. The cause of polymyositis is not fully understood.  Although there's no cure for polymyositis, treatment can improve muscle strength and function.

HLA class II alleles may influence susceptibility to adult dermatomyositis and polymyositis in a Han Chinese population.

Author(s): Xiang Gao, Lei Han, Lan Yuan, Yongchen Yang, Guimei Gou, Hengjuan Sun, Ling Lu, Liming Bao

Journal:

Polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM) are idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. Genetic variability in human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes plays an important role in the pathogenesis of PM and DM. However, few studies on the subject in Chinese populations have been reported thus far.

Association between a C8orf13-BLK polymorphism and polymyositis/dermatomyositis in the Japanese population: an additive effect with STAT4 on disease susceptibility.

Author(s): Tomoko Sugiura, Yasushi Kawaguchi, Kanako Goto, Yukiko Hayashi, Takahisa Gono, Takefumi Furuya, Ichizo Nishino, Hisashi Yamanaka

Journal:

Accumulating evidence has shown that several non-HLA genes are involved in the susceptibility to polymyositis/dermatomyositis. This study aimed to investigate the involvement of C8orf13-BLK, one of the strongest candidate genes for autoimmune diseases, in susceptibility to polymyositis/dermatomyositis ...
