Polymyositis

Common Name(s)

Polymyositis

Polymyositis is one of a group of muscle diseases known as the inflammatory myopathies, which are characterized by chronic muscle inflammation accompanied by muscle weakness.  Polymyositis affects skeletal muscles (those involved with making movement) on both sides of the body.  It is rarely seen in persons under age 18; most cases are seen in adults between the ages of 31 and 60. The cause of polymyositis is not fully understood.  Although there's no cure for polymyositis, treatment can improve muscle strength and function.

Altered mean platelet volume in patients with polymyositis and its association with disease severity.

Author(s): Y-F Peng, Y-X Huang, Y-S Wei

Journal: Braz. J. Med. Biol. Res.. 2016 ;49(6):e5168.

Polymyositis (PM) is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation in skeletal muscle. Mean platelet volume (MPV), a marker in the assessment of systemic inflammation, is easily measured by automatic blood count equipment. However, to our knowledge, there are no data ...

Effects of conventional immunosuppressive treatment on CD244+ (CD28null) and FOXP3+ T cells in the inflamed muscle of patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis.

Author(s): Jayesh M Pandya, Ingela Loell, Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, Mei Zong, Helene Alexanderson, Sukanya Raghavan, Ingrid E Lundberg, Vivianne Malmström

Journal:

T-cell infiltrates may persist in muscle tissue of polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM) patients despite aggressive immunosuppressive treatment. Here, we investigated to what extent persistent T cells in affected muscle were FOXP3+, a marker for regulatory T cells (Tregs), or ...
