Intervertebral disc disease

Common Name(s)

Intervertebral disc disease, Intervertebral disc disorder

Intervertebral disc disease (IDD) is a common musculoskeletal condition that primarily affects the back. It is characterized by intervertebral disc herniation and/or sciatic pain (sciatica) and is a primary cause of low back pain, affecting about 5% of individuals. Both environmental and genetic factors are thought to predispose an individual to developing the condition. Treatment for IDD may include physical therapy, pain medications, and sometimes surgical intervention such as discectomy or spinal fusion.

Chemometric evaluation of concentrations of trace elements in intervertebral disc tissue in patient with degenerative disc disease.

Author(s): Łukasz Kubaszewski, Anetta Zioła-Frankowska, Zuzanna Gasik, Marcin Frankowski, Mikołaj Dąbrowski, Bartłomiej Molisak, Jacek Kaczmarczyk, Robert Gasik

Journal: Ann Agric Environ Med. 2017 Dec;24(4):610-617.

The work is designed to uncover the pattern of mutual relation among trace elements and epidemiological data in the degenerated intervertebral disk tissue in humans. Hitherto the reason of the degenerative process is not fully understood. Trace elements are the basic components of ...

Author(s): Se Hee Kim, Sang Sik Choi, Mi Kyung Lee, Jung Eun Kin

Journal: Pain Physician. 2016 07;19(6):E901-4.

Most cases of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) occur after some inciting injury. There are a few cases of CRPS after an operation for disc disease. CRPS from a mild herniated intervertebral disc (HIVD) without surgical intervention is even rarer than CRPS after an operation for ...

Author(s): Daisuke Sakai

Journal: Eur Spine J. 2008 Dec;17 Suppl 4():452-8.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a primary cause of low back pain and has a high societal cost. Research on cell-based therapies for intervertebral disc disease is emerging, along with the interest in biological therapy to treat disc disease without reducing the mobility of the ...
