Hyperinsulinism, focal

Common Name(s)

Hyperinsulinism, focal

Hyperinsulinism is a rare condition that comes in two forms, diffuse hyperinsulinism and focal hyperinsulinism. Hyperinsulinism means that a person’s body makes too much insulin. Insulin is a messenger that tells the body to break down sugars to make energy needed for daily life. This is caused by a problem with the pancreas (an organ in the abdomen that aids digestion), and in focal hyperinsulism just a portion of the pancreas is effected rather than the entire organ (diffuse hyperinsulinism). Signs of hyperinsulinism usually appear in early infancy to late childhood. Symptoms include frequent episodes of low blood sugar, a lack of energy, irritability, and difficulty feeding.
