Deafness Epiphyseal Dysplasia Short Stature

Common Name(s)

Deafness Epiphyseal Dysplasia Short Stature

Deafness - Epiphyseal Dysplasia - Short Stature is a rare syndrome, or combination of abnormal features. This syndrome is characterized by deafness and short height. Epiphyseal refers to the growing ends of the bones and dysplasia refers to abnormal growth. Together, epiphyseal dysplasia can be understood as the abnormal growth of the bones that causes the person to be shorter than other unaffected individuals. This syndrome may also cause changes in facial structure, such as a triangular-shaped face and pointed chin. The syndrome is a genetic disorder and, more specifically, is caused by an autosomal recessive trait. This means that a trait for this disease is passed from both parents to the affected child, even though the parents are often unaffected. Fortunately, with the use of various hearing devices and the help of speech therapists, most affected individuals are able to overcome limitations due to deafness and go on to live full and healthy lives.
