Cerebral Palsy

Common Name(s)

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy is a set of conditions that affect movement balance and posture caused by disruption to a developing brain, usually before birth. In some cases there may be some genetic effect that results in "miswiring" during neuronal development. Generally cerebral palsy is usually diagnosed during infancy or preschool and the effect on physical ability varies greatly. Cerebral palsy can cause impaired movement associated with exaggerated reflexes, floppiness or rigidity of the limbs and trunk, abnormal posture, involuntary movements, unsteadiness of walking, or some combination of these. Some people show normal to near normal intellectual function, but others may have intellectual disabilities. Epilepsy, blindness or deafness also may be present.
