Neurofibromatosis type 2

Common Name(s)

Neurofibromatosis type 2, Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2), Bilateral Acoustic Neurofibromatosis, BANF Acoustic Neurinoma

Neurofibromatosis type 2 is a disorder characterized by the growth of noncancerous tumors in the nervous system. The most common tumors associated with neurofibromatosis type 2 are called vestibular schwannomas or acoustic neuromas. These growths develop along the nerve that carries information from the inner ear to the brain (the auditory nerve). Tumors that occur on nerves in other areas of the brain or spinal cord are also commonly seen with this condition. Mutations in the NF2 gene cause neurofibromatosis type 2. Neurofibromatosis type 2 is considered to have an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance.

Cerebral hernia caused by a thoracic surgery for multiple schwannomas in a patient with Neurofibromatosis type 2.

Author(s): Sida Qin, Chengcheng Yang, Hong Ren

Journal: Turk Neurosurg. 2013 ;23(2):245-8.

Schwannoma is a benign nerve sheath tumor composed of Schwann cells. A solitary schwannoma in the thorax is not rare, but a patient with Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) and multiple thoracic schwannomas is extremely rare. We report the case of a 27-year-old woman with NF2 and two large ...

Neurofibromatosis type 2 tumor suppressor protein, NF2, induces proteasome-mediated degradation of JC virus T-antigen in human glioblastoma.

Author(s): Sarah Beltrami, Emanuela Branchetti, Ilker K Sariyer, Jessica Otte, Michael Weaver, Jennifer Gordon

Journal: PLoS ONE. 2013 ;8(1):e53447.

Neurofibromatosis type 2 protein (NF2) has been shown to act as tumor suppressor primarily through its functions as a cytoskeletal scaffold. However, NF2 can also be found in the nucleus, where its role is less clear. Previously, our group has identified JC virus (JCV) tumor antigen ...

Journal: PLoS ONE. 2012 ;7(9):e46132.

Patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) develop bilateral cochleovestibular schwannomas (CVSs) that cause binaural deafness in most individuals. Hearing loss occurs in an unpredictable manner and the underlying mechanisms are not known. To gain insight into the pathophysiologic ...

Neurofibromatosis type 2 protein, NF2: an uncoventional cell cycle regulator.

Author(s): Sarah Beltrami, Richard Kim, Jennifer Gordon

Journal: Anticancer Res.. 2013 Jan;33(1):1-11.

Neurofibromatosis type 2 protein (NF2) is an underappreciated tumor suppressor involved in a broad range of nervous system tumors. Inactivation of the NF2 gene leads to neurofibromatosis type-2, which is characterized by multiple benign nervous system tumors and mutations in the gene ...
