Diabetes mellitus type 1

Common Name(s)

Diabetes mellitus type 1

Diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1DM), or juvenile diabetes, is a form of diabetes that comes from autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This leads to a lack of insulin, a hormone that regulates energy production by affecting the transport of glucose into the cells. T1DM results in increased glucose in the blood and urine, causing symptoms of increased urination, thirst, hunger, and weight loss. Low or high blood sugar complications may result from T1DM. Low blood sugar can cause seizures and high blood sugar can cause fatigue and may damage organs over time. Risk factors for T1DM include family history, genetics, geography, viral exposure, early vitamin D, dietary factors, jaundice at birth, respiratory infection soon after birth, and a mother younger than 25 at childbirth. T1DM incidence typically increases as the distance from the equator increases. Viruses that are risk factors for T1DM include Epstein-Barr virus, coxsackievirus, mumps virus, or cytomegalovirus. T1DM usually originates in childhood, but may be developed in adulthood. This condition is diagnosed by autoantibody testing and the C-peptide assay.
